Lesson 4.1: Fire Safety Basics

Fire Safety – Know It Before You Need It

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility — not just the venue’s or the supervisor’s. You need to know what to do in case of fire, how to evacuate safely, and how to avoid creating hazards in the first place.

Even if you’re only on-site for a few hours, you’re expected to be switched on and ready to respond.

1. Raise the Alarm

If you see flames, smell smoke, or notice a fire risk — raise the alarm immediately. Don’t wait. Tell your supervisor or press the nearest fire call point.

2. Follow the Evacuation Plan

Every site has its own emergency procedure. You’ll be briefed during your first few shifts or at the start of the event. Don’t run. Don’t stop to collect belongings. Just move quickly and calmly to the nearest fire exit.

3. Go to the Assembly Point

Wait at the designated meeting point until told otherwise. Do not re-enter the building until it’s confirmed safe.

  • Don’t try to fight the fire unless you’re trained and it’s safe to do so
  • Don’t ignore alarms or assume “someone else will deal with it”
  • Don’t block fire exits or wedge open fire doors
  • Don’t panic — your job is to keep calm and lead by example

Be aware of:

  • Electrical equipment and wires — report any damage
  • Build-up of rubbish or cardboard
  • Smoking or vaping in unauthorised areas
  • Leaving bags or boxes in walkways or stairwells

At the beginning of every new shift or site:

  • Identify your nearest fire exits
  • Know the assembly point location
  • Ask a supervisor if you haven’t been briefed
  • Never assume every site is the same — they’re not
