Lesson 4.4: First Aid Awareness
Be Prepared — Even If You’re Not the First Aider
You don’t need to be a qualified first aider to know what to do when something goes wrong.
At DIMA Group, we expect all staff to be aware of the basic steps to take if someone is injured or unwell. Knowing what to do — and what not to do — can make a huge difference.
What to Do If Someone Is Hurt
Step 1: Stay Calm
Panicking helps no one. Take a deep breath, stay steady, and focus on the person in front of you.
Step 2: Get Help
Immediately inform the on-site first aider or supervisor. Every venue will have someone trained and a first aid kit nearby.
Step 3: Clear the Area (if needed)
Give the person space and keep guests or customers back if necessary.
Step 4: Record the Incident
After the situation is dealt with, make sure it’s reported through the correct process.
This might include:
- An incident report form found on C247
- Logging details with a supervisor or venue manager
- Notifying the DIMA office if serious
Important to Know
You are not expected to treat anyone.
Unless you are a qualified first aider and have been asked to assist — don’t attempt to give treatment yourself.
Never leave the person alone if they are injured or unconscious — always stay with them until help arrives or you’re told otherwise.
Do not move anyone unless they’re in immediate danger (e.g. fire or falling object risk).
Know Where First Aid Is
At the start of any new shift or venue:
- Ask where the first aid point is
- Know who the designated first aider is
- Find out how to call for medical support if needed
What Counts As a Reportable Incident?
- Cuts or bruises
- Slips, trips, and falls
- Fainting, seizures, or breathing issues
- Anything requiring first aid
- Any injury that means someone has to leave the site
Even small incidents should be logged — especially if they involve a member of the public.
