Lesson 5.1 – Mobile Phones on Shift
Use of mobile phones while on duty
While on duty, your primary responsibility is to maintain safety, security, and professionalism. The use of personal mobile phones can be distracting and may compromise safety or service delivery.
Personal mobile phones must not be used during working hours unless authorised by management or required for operational purposes.
Acceptable use
Mobile phones may only be used:
• For work related purposes where authorised
• In an emergency
• During authorised breaks and away from public view
Any authorised use must not interfere with your duties or reduce your awareness of what is happening around you.
Unacceptable use
The following is not permitted while on duty:
• Personal calls or messaging
• Browsing social media
• Watching videos or streaming content
• Using headphones or earphones
• Any use that distracts from your duties
Using your phone in view of customers or clients may be seen as unprofessional and may lead to complaints.
Emergency situations
In an emergency, your priority is safety. You may use your phone to contact emergency services or management if required. Once the situation is under control, you must follow incident reporting procedures.
Consequences of misuse
Misuse of mobile phones while on duty may result in:
• Removal from the site
• Disciplinary action
• Loss of future shifts
