Lesson 7.4: Emergency Procedures

Responding to emergencies

Emergencies can occur without warning. You must be prepared to respond calmly, professionally, and in accordance with site procedures and risk assessments.

Your priority in any emergency is the safety of people.

Familiarising yourself with emergency procedures

Before starting duties on site, you must familiarise yourself with:
• Fire evacuation routes
• Assembly points
• Emergency exits
• Alarm systems
• Site specific emergency instructions

This information will be contained within site documents, risk assessments, or venue briefings.

Fire emergencies

If you discover a fire:
• Raise the alarm immediately
• Inform venue management or fire marshals
• Assist with evacuation where safe to do so
• Direct people towards the nearest safe exit
• Do not put yourself at risk

You must never obstruct emergency exits or evacuation routes.

Other emergencies

Emergencies may include:
• Medical emergencies
• Violent incidents
• Structural or environmental hazards
• Evacuation due to external threats

In all cases you must:
• Follow site emergency procedures
• Contact emergency services where required
• Inform management as soon as possible
• Record the incident using C247 once safe

Your role during evacuation

During an evacuation you must:
• Remain calm and professional
• Encourage people to leave safely and promptly
• Follow instructions from venue management or emergency services
• Assist vulnerable individuals where safe to do so

Once evacuated, you must remain at the assembly point unless instructed otherwise.

After an emergency

After an emergency you must
• Report the incident to management
• Complete an incident report via C247
• Cooperate with any investigation

You must not provide statements to media or post information online.
