Lesson 7.7: Lone Working

Lone working arrangements

Lone working refers to situations where you are working by yourself without close or direct supervision. This may include working at quieter venues, during certain hours, or at sites where only one Door Supervisor is deployed.

Lone working is not automatically unsafe, but it must be properly assessed and managed.

Working safely when alone

When lone working, you must:
• Follow site specific risk assessments
• Be aware of your surroundings at all times
• Maintain communication where required
• Follow Assignment Instructions strictly
• Avoid unnecessary confrontation or risk taking

You must not place yourself in situations that exceed your level of training, authority, or personal safety.

Risk assessments and lone working

Lone working must be covered by a suitable risk assessment. You must ensure that lone working arrangements are appropriate for the site and the type of duties being carried out.

If you believe lone working is unsafe or not adequately assessed, you must report this to management immediately.

You must not continue working in unsafe conditions.

Communication and escalation

You must know how to contact management or emergency services if required.

If a situation escalates beyond your control while lone working, you must:
• Prioritise your safety
• Withdraw where appropriate
• Contact management or emergency services
• Report the incident using C247 once safe

Restrictions on lone working

Certain situations may require additional staff or supervision. You must not carry out duties alone if instructed otherwise by management or if site risk assessments prohibit lone working.
